KRUK!
FRIKAR Dance Company’s playful dance with animated rock engravings in their KRUK! performance takes us right to the roots of the “hallingdansen” while simultaneously clarifying the “hallingdansen’s” close links to modern street dance.
The Norwegian choreographer Hallgrim Hansegård’s ambition with KRUK! is to reassess the tradition and to challenge the ensemble to reach beyond the traditionally solo nature of the “halling”.
Composer Andres Ljones’s live music blends seamlessly with choreographer and
dancer Hallgrim Hansegård’s Norwegian folk dance to create performing art which is both contemporary, exciting and exotic. KRUK! depicts a modern interpretation of “hallingdansen” - a fusion of impulsive, cat-like movements and strong, acrobatic exuberance.
Back in the peasant communities of the 19th century, so-called free men would roam from farm to farm, displaying their talent for dancing the legs off everyone else at festivities - a bygone form of “battle” between free souls where the musicians whipped the dancers into provocative movements knownas “neck jumps” “hooked dance” and “headspin”.
Choreographer Hallgrim Hansengård formed the FRIKAR Dance Company in 2006 - a unique ensemble comprising some of the absolute elite performers of “hallingdans”. KRUK! has toured more than 50 cities and has aroused much attention, not least through appearances in Eurovision 2009, World Expo 2012 in Shanghai, and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert.
